The bronze cast sculpture of the education of the infant Bacchus, god of wine and revelry, is similarly unfinished. After making a model in clay or wax and molds in plaster, the sculptor would have cast individual parts in bronze to attach with pins. These pins still link individual components together. Next, the sculptor would have welded the pieces together and smoothed the surface before adding a patina. Paused before this final step, this sculpture captures a moment in the workshop.
