Learning to Look
Created by the Hood Museum of Art, Learning to Look is an approach designed to help viewers look carefully and think critically about any work of art.
The resources provided here include a full-screen image of a work of art, along with guidelines to help teachers lead a discussion about it with their students. Each resource introduces the five steps involved in exploring a work of art: careful observation, analysis, research, interpretation, and critical assessment and personal response.
A Closer Look Brochures
These brochures were originally designed for use in the galleries. They introduce visitors to one work of art through the Learning to Look method.
Native American Art Educator Resources
This site is designed to help educators and students explore the Hood Museum of Art's collection of Native American art. It features over 100 objects grouped thematically from four regions of North America. The goal of this resource is to encourage teachers to integrate original works of art into their study of Native American culture and history, help build skills for looking carefully and thinking critically about works of art, expand awareness of and appreciation for the accomplishments of Native American artists, and promote best practices in the teaching of Native American culture and history.
This site, the related Native America Map and Advanced Search, object images, videos and resources were made possible in part by a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
