Label
Placed in central locations in churches, tombs were significant public monuments that commemorated important leaders, preserving their accomplishments for future generations. Located in St. Peter’s Basilica, the tomb of Pope Paul III was made by Guglielmo della Porta between 1549 and 1575. At the base, allegorical figures of Justice and Prudence suggest the wisdom of Paul’s reign. This print belongs to a book of illustrations of the Vatican published to promote church history and artistic legacy. Through his sculpted image, Paul could retain his status for generations to come.
