Label
Ordinary people come under attack as soldiers begin to destroy a country inn. A man and a woman peer from their windows, only beginning to grasp the action unfolding below. Armed with pikes and firearms, the soldiers have quickly overtaken the unwitting civilians. In the center, one man in aristocratic dress challenges the soldiers with his sword, although his companion in the foreground has just lost his fight. Some troops already depart the inn, laden with goods they have stolen. A woman, perhaps the innkeeper, attempts, in vain, to stop one thieving soldier. Although the faces of Callot’s figures are almost unreadable given the small size of the work, their bodily gestures communicate their fear, horror, and rage. The artist’s attention to the war beyond the battlefield is also the subject of Plates 6 and 7 from the series, on display nearby.
