Label
Coming at the end of Callot’s series, this print presents a scene of retribution. As punishment for the churches they have desecrated, marauding soldiers are themselves burned to death. At the center of the image, a man is tied to a pillar encircled in flames. The rising smoke blends in with the fire coming from the church in the background. The arms of the defeated troops are piled at the left foreground of the print, as soldiers line both sides of the image to watch the burning at the center. Each man’s face is almost expressionless before the execution, one of many atrocities that Callot chronicled.
