Related to the “Small Miseries” group also on display here, Callot’s “Great Miseries” series comprises eighteen prints chronicling the effects of the Thirty Years War. They are distinguished mostly by their size. Printed as the war was still ongoing, Callot evokes the brutality of the conflict rather than chronicling specific historic events. In this print, soldiers convicted of war crimes are sentenced to capital punishment. Stripped bare—their clothes and weapons left in a pile in the foreground—the men are hung from a large tree. A priest climbs a ladder to offer last rites. Although the soldiers have themselves committed atrocities, they are now subject to grotesque punishment. The dense cluster of dangling bodies offers a haunting condemnation of the continuing horror of war.
