Label
Goya’s Disasters of Wars chronicles the effects of the French invasion of Spain under Napoleon Bonaparte at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Numbered and captioned, the prints can be read together or individually as records of the atrocities committed against civilians. In this image, two soldiers turn their backs to the viewer, readying their guns to shoot. They aim at a man whom they have tied to a tree, making escape impossible. In the background, more French troops arrive, their faces obscured in a haze of lines. The image’s caption offers a single word to condemn their behavior: Barbarians.
