Titled, in plate, upper center: THE NORTH-EAST VIEW OF PEVENSEY-CASTLE, IN THE COUNTY OF SUSSEX.; incribed, in plate, lower left margin: To the R.t [t in superscript] Hon:ble [ble in superscript] SPENCER COMPTON Earl of WIlmington Viscount / Pevensey and Baron of Wilmington in the County of Sussex. President of / his MAJ.TYS [TYS in superscript] most Hon:ble [ble in superscript] Privy Council and one of the Knights of the most / Noble Order of the Garter./ This Prospect with all Submission is Inscrib'd / by his Lordships most humble & most Obed.t [t in superscript] Serv.ts [ts in superscript] / Samu:l [l in superscript] & Nath:l [l in superscript] Buck.; inscribed, in plate, lower center margin: [crest: Arms of Spencer Compton with motto] NISI DOMINUS / SOLA BONA UAE [AE in ligature] HONEST A; inscribed, in pate, lower right margin: THIS Castle with ye [e in superscript] Town adjoining now known by ye [e in superscript] Name of Pevensey or Pmsey was call'd by the Saxons / Peosensea, & by ye [e in superscript] Normans Pevensel. Archbishop Usher takes this to be ye [e in superscript] old Caer-Pensavel-Coit of ye [ e in superscript] Britans, and / Mr [r in superscript] Somner thinks it to be much more probably ye [e in superscript] Anderida of ye [e in superscript] Romans than Newenden in Kent. The Noble / Ruins here represented in which are to be seen regular Stratums of Roman or British Bricks are strong Ar- / guments of its Antiquity. History too informs us of its Grandeur in later Times viz:in ye [e in superscript] Conquerors that this Castle was / very large and beautiful. The Harbour which a few years since afforded passage to small Vessels, but is no quite choakt / up, was certainly of Old large & commodious, for this was one of ye [e in superscript] Sea Ports that Godwin Earl of Kent ravaged in / the Confessors Time, and carried off many Ships. Here also Suane Son of Odo Earl of Kent AD:1049 to seduce / his Kinsman beorne who he afterward basely murder'd came with his Fleet.
