Seated at a table strewn with coins, the collector Andrea Odoni reaches out his hand as he clasps a small, ancient sculpture of Diana of Ephesus. Around him are a mix of ancient and contemporary sculptures that hint at the breadth of his collection, which made him famous in the city of Venice. A headless nude female figure rests against a man’s head in the foreground, while statuettes adorn the background. Odoni’s sumptuous fur-trimmed robe complements the luxury of the scene. As a member of the citizen class, rather than the nobility, Odoni used his vast collection of sculpture to claim an elevated social status.
