The challenging smirk on Jessica’s face speaks to an assured child who knows that her world does not depend on adult knowledge. Black girls often suffer from “adultification,” or the perception that they are years older than they are coupled with consequently misaligned expectations about their needs and behavior. With her precocious yet innocent expression, Jessica conveys her own inner confidence.
