Pictorialist photographers of the Photo-Secession explored the limits of the medium in the early years of the 20th century, advocating for photography’s status as a fine art. Through complex technical manipulation, artists such as Edward Steichen drew upon the atmospheric aesthetic of contemporary American landscape painting. In dark, dreamlike compositions like this low-angle view across a pond, he depicted nature as a place for reflection and renewal.
