Pictorialist photographers of the Photo-Secession explored the limits of the medium in the early years of the 20th century, advocating for photography’s status as a fine art. Through complex technical manipulation, artists such as Clarence H. White drew upon the atmospheric aesthetic of contemporary American landscape painting. In emotionally evocative compositions like this late-evening plein-air portrait, he depicted nature as an intimate space for reflection.
