In Careful! The Pier is Rocking!, sharp tonal contrasts draw our attention to the eight cups of tea a man is deftly balancing as he traverses a pier at a petroleum settlement near Baku, Azerbaijan. The server’s juggling of the glasses, especially on the moving surface, indicates his athleticism, while his casual expression implies his experience. The composition’s playful tone associates tea with respite and gathering.
