By capturing rugged Goose Eye Mountain from across a deep, peaceful meadow under fair skies, Boston painter Francis Seth Frost eschewed the dramatic landscapes that appealed to an earlier generation of painters and collectors. He instead adopted a quieter, more intimate approach to nature, evidenced here through carefully observed details, clarified lighting, and compositional structure based on a series of horizontal bands. The seated couple enjoying the scene adds to the painting’s serene mood.
