Marked twice-on inside of each grip: SM [pellet between, in rectangle]; engraved on joint, in script: E Day [pellet between]

Label

The early scissor-type sugar tong, of which this is an example, was displaced by the more familiar bow-shaped form that became popular after 1780. The circular grips, delicately curving shanks, and scallop-shell tips give this piece a decorative appeal.
