If you look closely at the light-colored wood inlay on the front of this sideboard, you will discover small bellflowers on the vertical supports between the drawers. These floral details brought the natural world into the owner’s home and became popular design elements on Connecticut River Valley furniture.

This sideboard was likely constructed locally by Julius Barnard. Barnard operated a cabinetmaking shop in Hanover in 1801 before moving to Windsor, Vermont, where he worked from 1802 to 1809 until relocating again to Montreal. This elegant piece of dining-room furniture belonged to Mills Olcott (1774–1845), who was treasurer of Dartmouth College from 1816 to 1822.
