Drawings were an essential element of studio and workshop practice for sculptors, just as they were for artists in other media. Sketches might be made from live models, but ancient sculpture and casts after the Antique were also essential tools for artists practicing their skills or developing compositions. This sheet appears to show the artist working through a variety of poses, possibly for a religious subject. Maratti has focused especially on understanding how drapery and the body work together, revising his composition across the page.
