Drawings were an essential element of sculptors’ studio and workshop practice, just as they were for artists in other media. Sketches might be made from live models, but antique sculpture and plaster casts were also essential tools for artists practicing their skills or developing compositions. This sketch seems to depict at least two different bearded men; the balding man at right and center may be the same individual from different perspectives, while the man at the left bears the close-cropped curly hair and beard of many depictions of Roman emperors.
