A prolific cartoonist, Honoré Daumier made numerous illustrations of contemporary events for the satirical newspaper Le Charivari. In one series, Daumier focused on the events of the Crimean War (1853–1856), during which the French, allied with the Ottoman and British Empires, fought against Russian expansion. In 1854, Russia invaded the territories of Wallachia and Moldavia, now present-day Romania. Here, a caricatured Russian soldier, marked by his long mustache, whips a line of kneeling Wallachians and Moldavians, dressed in peasants’ attire. In opposing a cruel Russian military against defenseless farmers, Daumier casts the conflict as a fight for justice to French readers. His satirical title suggests that violence is inherent to the colonizing aims of the war.
