Label

This work’s repetition of faces, objects, scribbles, and symbols in a variety of media makes for an overwhelming, cacophonous composition. In addition, no repetition of forms is exactly the same, giving the work an organic unpredictability that draws the viewer into something different each time they look. Skulls and dark muddled colors evoke a sense of loss that is pierced by the stark white prayer hands.

Here, Glantzman offers the viewer a glimpse into her mind, where the people she has loved and the experiences she has had take their tumultuous shape. At the center of the paper is David Wojnarowicz, artist and dear friend of Glantzman. Both were part of the vibrant art scene in lower Manhattan during the AIDS epidemic, and this work simultaneously mourns the loss of Wojnarowicz to AIDS and expresses Glantzman’s broader relationship to her lived grief.
