This plaquette has been transformed into a pax, a type of liturgical object used during the Mass, the most important Catholic liturgical service. In the Mass, the clergy and laity would exchange the “kiss of peace” to signify Christian community. Rather than embracing one another, the congregation would instead kiss the pax, which means peace in Latin. While the back handle has now been broken off, the wear upon the central figures attests to the plaquette’s devotional use. Through their tactile engagement with the image of Christ, devotees could feel closer to him, here depicted at the moment of his death and surrounded by his followers.
