Here, a man stands in profile in a field. A cigarette juts from his mouth, drawing attention to his facial deformity. With one hand held behind him, the man uses a cane to stabilize himself. His posture conveys a sense of dignity and importance. This is noteworthy because people with disabilities are rarely perceived as dignified. What decisions were made by the artist and the person in the image that led to the old man’s assertion of dignity?
