A cottonwood tree smolders in the spring moonlight, slowly falling to embers and ash in an already-charred field in the rolling hills of east-central Kansas. While 19th-century Midwestern settlers considered the natural wildfires and controlled burns managed by Native American tribes to be dangerous and destructive, they formed an integral part of the ecosystem, reducing invasive species and inducing new growth that is more palatable to grazing animals.
