Allan Houser created sculptural works built on his foundational experience in painting and drawing—examples of which hang to the right. An accomplished draftsman, Houser continuously experimented with media and subject matter, while deriving inspiration from his cultural heritage as well as the contemporary world. From iconic narratives to geometric abstractions, Houser’s diverse approach to subject matter was paralleled by his expertise in multiple sculptural media, including stone, marble, bronze, and wood. His resistance to the expectations and assumptions commonly imposed on Native American art empowered the continual evolution and innovation that characterize his diverse body of work.
