In this stonecut print, Leah Qumaluk demonstrates a masterful use of negative space and employs a bold blue-green line to define the human figure. For the bird figure, Qumaluk uses the opposite technique, defining the figure through negative space. The juxtaposition of these figures—and techniques—as well as the exaggerated scale alludes to the interdependency of these beings. Actively involved with the Puvirnituq print shop since its inception, Qumaluk worked as both a printer and an artist beginning in the early 1960s. She is unique in the sense that as an artist and printer, she often had control of her imagery from the initial concept to the final printing.
