Label
“Paper is paper,” Ida Shōichi once stated in an interview. As an experimental printmaker and draughtsman, Ida challenged the belief in an artist’s total control of the material. He claimed that materials have their own natural characteristics, and the artist’s role is to act as a mediator, allowing the needs of the medium to be revealed. Ida contextualized this idea in his Surface Is Between series, as displayed in this gallery. He compressed ink stains on different sides of the paper to allow the pigment to spread across both, creating a unique and free form.
