In this massive abstraction, luminous layers of greens and yellows evoke the foliage of the rural Vermont town—only 65 miles from Hanover—for which Purdum has named the painting. Using her fingers to move the paint, the artist composed swirling layers that build a gentle world of contemplation, creating a sense of absorption for the viewer. Purdum’s work draws inspiration from the environment in which she lives and works, but it also connects to a deeper metaphysical meaning. She writes: "After decades in the studio making and looking at abstract paintings, I have relied on the belief that art and spirit are one in the same and have always wanted my work to lead to something greater than myself." What experience is conjured within you as you stand before this work? From the 2022 exhibition A Space for Dialogue 105, Transcendent Landscapes: Abstracting Nature, curated by Alice Crow '22, Levinson Intern
