I spend a lot of time trying to work out where things meet—where form meets space. I spend a lot of time trying to activate that area. That’s where drawing is. --John Walker

Walker made this work at a moment in his career where he sought to merge some of the lessons of contemporary minimalist sculpture with his painting practice. Specifically, he was experimenting with making shapes into actual objects themselves by collaging pieces of painted canvas onto his painting. He viewed the places where the edges meet as the lines of drawings and deliberately blurred the relationship between the subject or object and the background.
