Label
A man in the park wearing workout clothes and a pair of headphones rests, perhaps after exercising. His comfort in front of the camera gives the photo a candid nature and implies a close relationship between the photographer and the man. Within the setting of a public park, it feels like an everyday moment that allows the viewer a glimpse into the lives of the photographed and the photographer.
Warhol’s impact on the New York City art scene is well documented. These photographs, however, differ from his usual portraits of celebrities, artists, and muses. Pictured is Warhol’s last lover, Jon Gould, who ultimately passed away from AIDS. Both men had complicated relationships with their sexuality and feared its negative impact on their careers. Yet, these photos are only two of the many Warhol took of Gould, speaking to his infatuation with the man over the course of their five years together.
