Enea Vico’s six-print series All’Antica Trophies after designs by Polidoro da Caravaggio demonstrates an endless recombination of motifs. It also reveals how such ornamental patterns spread between different media. Polidoro had worked with Raphael to paint the Vatican Stanze, and he later painted façades of Roman palazzi (palaces) with bands of antique and grotesque embellishment. These façades, in turn, were copied by young artists in Rome such as Vico. These prints, which showcase stacks of armor, shields, drums, weapons, and fantastical creatures, could then serve as inspirations for sculptors to incorporate into their works, creating a shared European vocabulary of ornamentation.
