Box marked, "Absolute Wave, Grating III" "This is an original Rowland grating and was used by Dr. Louis Bell ('85) in measuring the wave length of sodium line 5896. For a very brief time the value of the wavelength was a world standard. The grating was used by Prof. Wm Rogers of Colby as a standard. It was acquired by me in 1898 and was brought here by me in 1899-1900" -G.F. Hull. It has 29000 spaces in four inches. For a further description of the # 3 grating see Louis Bell, "The Absolute Wavelength of Light" American Journal of Science, vol. XXXV, April 1888, p. 275.
